Dr. Carlo Andrea Malanima is a world-class musician and dedicated educator with over 25 years of professional experience as a violist and music teacher. His remarkable career has seen him perform with some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras and institutions, including the Youth European Community Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Orchestra della Radio Televisione della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Dr. Malanima holds a lifetime position with the Teatro Carlo Felice Orchestra in Genoa, Italy, where he serves as Associate Principal Viola.
Throughout his career, Dr. Malanima has collaborated with iconic conductors and soloists, such as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, and Gustavo Dudamel. He has performed as Principal Viola in some of the most renowned music festivals, including the Puccini Festival, Mascagni Festival, and Verdi Festival, as well as with the Crested Butte Music Festival Orchestra in Colorado.
In addition to his orchestral achievements, Dr. Malanima is an accomplished chamber musician and co-founder of the Quartetto d’Archi Modigliani, with whom he has recorded and toured extensively. His solo recordings of contemporary music for Deutschland Radio earned him the prestigious Karl-Sczuka Prize in 2003. Internationally recognized as a specialist in baroque and medieval music, Dr. Malanima has performed in major concert halls across Europe, Russia, and Asia.
Dr. Malanima’s academic credentials are equally impressive. He earned a National Doctoral Diploma from the Italian Conservatory and an Advanced Certificate in Music Performance from The Juilliard School in New York, where he studied on a full scholarship. His training includes mentorship from renowned teachers such as Giusto Cappone, William Lincer, Karen Tuttle, and Yuri Bashmet, and participation in prestigious programs like the Meadowmount Summer String Festival, Tanglewood Music Festival, and Accademia Chigiana in Siena.
As an educator, Dr. Malanima has built a reputation for excellence, combining the rich traditions of the Italian violin and viola schools with innovative modern teaching methods. His approach integrates the philosophies of Ivan Galamian, Kato Havas, and William Primrose, among others. Many of his students are currently pursuing music majors at some of the most prestigious Universities in the US, have won international competitions, perform as soloists, and secure positions in major orchestras in Europe and the United States.
Dr. Malanima is a registered trained Suzuki Teacher for both violin and viola and specializes in early childhood music education, nurturing students as young as three years old. He is also in demand as a visiting clinician, coaching youth orchestras and chamber ensembles across Europe and the U.S. His teaching emphasizes technical mastery, artistic expression, and a deep love for music, inspiring students to reach their highest potential.
